02/05/2014 Recommended Riad

Riad Layalina is recommended for couples looking for a quiet and easy accessible place to stay, right next to the Medina of Fes. Comfortable and spacious rooms, good kitchen and friendly personnel. Free parking on a private parking lot is a nice bonus.

01/31/2014 Best stay in Morocco

Fez was our last stop in our travels through Morocco. Staying at Riad Layalina was the perfect ending! It was by far the best and most beautiful place we stayed. The staff was wonderful and we fell in love with them! The room was large, beautiful, and gave us spectacular views of Fez. We had a key not only for our room but to enter the door to the riad (very unusual to receive that advantage)! The public areas of this riad are exceptionally beautiful and guests obviously enjoyed this advantage as we met wonderful people staying there that were from U.S., Italy, Tanzinia~what a joy! The breakfasts were large and lovely. This Riad is very close to the entrance to the souk but just outside enough to not be in the madness (PERFECT)!

I am a picky clean freak from the U.S. and Riad Layalina met my standard! If we are ever back in the area I would not go anywhere else. They are fantastic on all levels!

01/29/2014 Blissful Riad in Fes!

My fiance and I returned from this riad almost a week ago, and we are still giddy from our fantastic stay here. We were met by Said in the nearby parking lot, who brought us and our bags into Riad Layalina– as soon as we entered, our jaws dropped: it is stunning! We were offered a tajine and Moroccan tea & marveled at all the riad’s beauty. There is a lovely rooftop terrace, that overlooks the historic medina, and the riad is in the perfect location to visit all the city’s must-sees (for ex. the “Blue Gate” can be reached in less than 10 mins!). The staff helped make our stay extra memorable– their warmth and hospitality made us feel like family, and we were truly sad to leave. After long days of exploring the medina, we ate delicious meals at the riad, were able to sleep soundly in the gorgeous and comfortable room we had booked, had no shortage of hot water (which unfortunately was not the case in many other places we stayed in Morocco) and updating friends and families on our journey was easy as the wifi worked very well.

There are many riads to choose from in/near the medina, but I would wholeheartedly recommend Riad Layalina for a perfect stay in Fes. Everything from the sweet staff, the yummy breakfasts, the location and the beauty of the riad was absolutely sublime. We had a fantastic experience, and will remember it fondly!

01/26/2014 Beautiful and charming Riad! Stop searching and book!

We stayed at this lovely Riad for our last 3 nights in Morocco and wholeheartedly recommend it! You can drive yourself crazy (as we did) searching through reviews — do yourself a favour and book this one if it’s available, you won’t regret it!

First, the location is perfect. In the north-west corner of the Medina, thirty seconds from a parking lot (Ait Aizlen I believe) which makes pickup/dropoff easy. It takes about one minute to walk from the Riad to the main street (Talaa Kebira) and about 5-10 minutes to get to Bab Bou Jeloud (Blue Gate). In other words, perfectly located in a safe, easy to find area (by walking or taxi) and a great starting point to explore from. Easy to just walk straight down Talaa Kebira to see the souks, funduqs, Kairaouine mosque, tanneries etc.

The Riad itself is a work of art disguised as a hotel. No other way to describe it — it’s literally bursting with intricacy and beauty, from the floors up to the ceiling. I can only imagine what it would look like had we come in Spring/Summer instead of winter, when we could have properly appreciated the rooftop terrace. Jerome was quite helpful by e-mail when planning our visit but sadly was out of town when we arrived, leaving us in the capable and polite hands of Said. We were greeted with mint tea and a delicious egg/tomato tajine and sweets, even though we arrived late in the evening after dinner service. We reserved the junior suite on the first floor which was stunning, and had a cool loft area inside with two single beds which would have been great for a family. The shower was hot and with great pressure, much needed considering we woke up in a Bedouin tent that morning!

Breakfast consisted of a variety of Moroccan pancakes, pastries, fresh OJ — the standard we’ve noticed at most places in the country. The chef/housekeeper, Naima, was very sweet and clearly works hard! We booked the Moroccan cooking class with her and another sweet lady (Amal) and it was a cool experience — went to the nearby market with Said to buy the food (which involved them slaughtering our chicken in front of us, a true “local food” experience!) then watched the ladies cook it, getting tips along the way. They made us an absolute FEAST which we were shamefully unable to finish.

Quick tip for those staying here who are looking for a good, affordable place to eat nearby — check out Cafe Clock, about 5 min away which serves cheap, tasty food (vegetarian friendly!) and great coffee in a chill environment — we went everyday!

In summary, we would highly recommend staying here and many thanks to Jerome and his staff for an incredible end to our trip!

01/26/2014 Beautiful!!

We stayed here for 4 nights, in our almost-month long trip to Morocco. This was the last accommodation, and by far, one of the best riads!! We were even lucky since it was under promotion.

1. The location is great. We arrived there from the Gare-routiere in Fez, and it takes only about 10min walk from there! It’s right next to the gate to the souks in medina, but not in the complex jungle of small passages in medina.

2. The food. We were served a dinner when we’d arrived, which was the first time for us to be treated in any riads. The breakfast as well was just great.

3. Staff. The staff were very helpful, though not very fluent in English, dealing with my flight ticket, etc.

4. Etc. Wifi worked really good!

I’d definately suggest this riad, it’s the PERFECT place in FEZ!!!

01/19/2014 Beautiful Riad!

We had a wonderful short stay at the Riad Layalina. We were at the end of our 16 day trip to Morocco and the beautiful Riad and excellent hospitality was exactly what was needed to cap a great trip! The home is beautifully decorated and includes the little things such as the local soap dishes that brings that bit more of authenticity. You can see that the Riad was lovingly restored. It’s location is perfect just outside of one of the main thoroughfares in the Medina and only 5 minutes walk to the main ‘Blue Gate’. We had a delicious meal on our first night and the breakfast included was delightful. We had been to 6 other properties within Morocco and this Riad was the best for such a reasonable price. All of the staff were happy to help us and always had a welcoming smile!

01/11/2014 The definition of perfection

What can I say?…this riad fulfilled all my expectations and more. Booking and communication beforehand was entirely straightforward and there were no hidden fees. I got a last minute bargain. Jerome answered all emails very quickly. Station pick up went smoothly, and I was greeted with not only mint tea but an unexpected (and much needed) tagine. The staff were friendly and attentive.

The room was beautiful, comfortable, and had heating which was welcome for Fes winter. The shower was good and hot and the bathroom beautiful with traditional polished plasterwork and mosaic tiling. The Internet really is high speed (or at least plenty fast enough for me) and you can get online anywhere in the riad.

I woke each morning to the coloured light spilling through the stained glass windows in my room to be served with a spread of Moroccan breakfast breads and cakes in the courtyard. The roof terrace has a fantastic view over the whole city and the Merinid tombs, and is a great place to hang out and sunbathe. I’m sure in warmer months the plunge pool would also be a welcome part of my stay.

The riad is situated in a very convenient and pleasant quiet location – it is next to a car park where petit taxis stop, and just off the Main Street, Talaa Kebira which you will walk up and down many times to see the sights and the souks. Being off it you have the proximity without the noise.

You will need at least 2 nights here and will likely want to extend your stay (as I did). Fes is a magical place that reveals more of itself the more you give of yourself. The spell has been cast and I shall certainly be back! Thank you all!

12/19/2013 Excellent

The trip was the present to my wife 60th birthday. all additional required services as taxi, dinner and last but not least a very early breakfast were accomplished by 100% by Said, Ousman and their Team; an absolut outstanding Performance.

11/12/2013 An Oasis in Fes

Lovingly restored, this riad is a true treasure to Fes! Just steps away from the bustling souk, the Riad Layalina is a welcome oasis of tranquility. The garden courtyard and fountain are the heart of the building. And sitting in the perfectly tiled courtyard, you feel transported back to a time when peace, privacy, and introspection were highly regarded and your courtyard was your own personal garden of eden. But, no matter how beautiful this riad or how thoughtfully the rooms have been appointed, it would be just a building without the people who are the soul of Riad Layalina. Jerome, Sayeed and the rest of the staff know the meaning of true hospitality and you are made to feel truly welcome from the moment you arrive to a delicious small tagine, homemade bread, mint tea and sweets. Fes is a lovely city, but we think that the kind and generous people of the Riad Layalina will be first on the list of our fondest memories of Fes.
